Biography

Nathan is a seasoned trumpet player and teacher travelling extensively, playing lead trumpet for such ensembles as the Guy Barker international jazz orchestra, Stan Tracey’s big band, the Colin Towns Mask Orchestra, and currently alongside the great lead player Tony Fisher with the Ronnie Scott’s resident big band.


Born December 10, 1972 Nathan began playing the trumpet when he was about 10 years old. He became a professional musician at the age of twenty when he performed for six years with a busy working band the “Sounds of the Blues Brothers“.

In his early twenties he developed his craft in various playing situations, from jazz groups to big bands - including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, The Memphis Belle big band, and various other jazz oriented projects.

Nathan won awards such as Yorkshire Televisions Young jazz musician of the year - Traditional section, 1989, and the Kenny Baker Memorial Prize in 2001. And has developed his solo style guesting with bands regularly.

In the mid Nineties Nathan played lead trumpet for the Big Blue big band - the band featured on the Pop Idol TV show, culminating in a national tour and recording an album with the winning contestants.

In 2004 He performed in the West End hit show the Rat Pack for Three years in the heart of London and he has since played in many other show since including Chicago, Guys and Dolls, Hairspray, and West Side Story.

Other projects include the X Factor big band, the WDR big band in Cologne, and the Frankfurt Radio band, and performances with musicians like international stars Quincy Jones, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Bruford, Kenny Wheeler and Tim Garland. Singers include, Tony Bennett, Jack Jones, Tony Hadley, and Lulu, Jamie Cullum, and Will Young.

A busy arranger and composer, Nathan has written arrangements for the Pop Idol big band, for Will Young, Kelly Clarkson, Emma Bunton. He arranges regularly on commission for various bands and has a large library of arrangements for various instrumentations.

Recently he has written an album of original music for his own band celebrating the town of Newark with it’s annual jazz festival. This was then recorded and turned into a CD as part of a commission funded by the National Lottery’s Awards For All grant.
